Exposure Sciences

A collection of integrated lesson plans designed to introduce middle school students to the topics of asthma and environmental health. This curriculum provides EALR aligned lesson plans to teachers in a variety of subjects. At least two lessons are provided for each subject. The lessons are designed to be stand alone units, allowing teachers to mix and match lessons and present them in any order. Resource materials are also included to help school librarians who are facilitating student research projects. This Fact File is also a valuable resource for school nurses, out of school programs, and parents. Also available in Spanish, 50 pages.

This 48-slide powerpoint presentation introduces the subject of environmental health. Contents includes definitions, hazards, and the seven core concepts of environmenal health: (1) toxicity, (2) exposure, (3) dose/response, (4) individual susceptibility, (5) risks and benefits, (6) environmental justice, and (7) community resources to find more information and/or take action. The PDF suggests ways to use short portions of the powerpoint for environmental health lessons.

The first installment in our Focus on Ecogenetics series, this one-page flyer developed in 2012 provides a summary of the EDGE research related to genetic susceptibility to pesticides. The flyer also explores related ethical issues and provides references and a glossary of terms.

A two-sided handout developed for a Public Health Café. It is aimed at a general audience and provides a brief description of the science of pesticide use, some examples from current research, things you can do to protect your health, and a list of links where you can learn more.

Best for grades 9-12. The lesson explores the use and safety of electronic cigarettes, compares e-cigarettes with conventional cigarettes, and opens discussion of vaping of hash oil (THC). Includes lesson plan, factsheet, and student worksheet. This lesson aligns with Washington State EALRs. 90 minutes or 2 50-minute class periods.
