A community-based participatory research project to address asthma and air pollution in Seattle's Duwamish Valley

Duwamish Air Improvement Study for Youth (DAISY)

In partnership with the Duwamish River Community Coalition, EDGE researchers received a five-year grant from the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to help reduce symptoms of asthma in children who live in Seattle's Duwamish Valley.

The team established a local community-based air quality monitoring network to measure pollutants from road traffic. They also distributed low-cost air filters to Duwamish Valley families with children with asthma to help clean their indoor air. They then monitored changes in children's asthma symptoms to evaluate how well the air filter intervention worked. The research team created a local Community Advocacy Team to determine how best to use study results to improve air quality and children's health.
