Curriculum. This hands-on lesson asks students to test the effect of ultraviolet (UV) light on UV-sensitive beads using plain lotion and sunscreens with varying SPF levels. Students will gain a better understanding of Exposure, an Environmental Health Core Concept. Students evaluate what they observe and consider how to apply this exercise to their personal choices about UV exposure and sunscreen use. Includes lesson plan, factsheet, student worksheet, and supply list. This lesson aligns with Washington State EALRs. 55-minute class period. Intended for grades 9-12.

Classroom resource: This slideset includes a slide for each of the 7 Core Concepts of Environmental Health: Toxicity, Exposure, Dose/Response, Individual Susceptibility, Risks and Benefits, Environmental Justice, and Community Resources and Action. Slides can be printed (8x11"), laminated, and posted in the classroom for a visual of the over-arching concepts of the environmental health lessons. Intended for grades 9-12.

Curriculum. A 30-minute classroom activity to introduce nutrition, organic versus conventional foods, packaging, labeling, and consumer choices. Can also use non-food artifacts for students to consider.

Classroom Activity, 7 pages. This activity is designed to get students or community members thinking critically about the complex issue related to workplace genetic testing for disease susceptibility. Participants read a two-part narrative, answer questions related to the reading, and are given an outcome based on their decision-making.

Classroom Activity, 28 pages. This activity is designed to get students or community members thinking critically about the complex issue of seafood safety. Participants take on three different roles to explore a hypothetical situation related to the topic.

A collection of worksheets and resources that helps teachers engage their students in locally relevant environmental health research projects. These inquiry-based materials provide the scaffolding necessary for students to successfully identify and investigate how things in their environment impact their health.
